Why the Lead Apron Vanished From Bakersfield Dental X-Rays

According to the ADA, modern digital X-ray systems combined with rectangular collimation — restricting the beam to only the area being imaged — protect patients from stray exposure more effectively than a lead apron does. Shielding can also block the primary beam and obscure the image the dentist needs, which forces a retake. A retake means a second exposure, so the apron intended to reduce radiation can end up increasing it.
The obstacle has not been convincing dentists. Alan Lurie, professor and chair of oral and maxillofacial radiology at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, who helped develop the underlying radiology recommendation, has described the science as settled while characterizing public education as an entirely separate challenge — and has said the panel anticipated patient discomfort as the main barrier to putting the change into practice. Two years on, many patients still expect the apron and read its absence as an oversight rather than a deliberate update.
Digital sensors are what changed the arithmetic. They require substantially less radiation than the film they replaced, display the image on screen within seconds rather than requiring chemical processing, and allow magnification and contrast adjustment without a second exposure. The ADA has noted that a dental X-ray can in some cases deliver less radiation than a person absorbs from natural background sources in a single day. The 2024 recommendations also address cone beam computed tomography, advising that the higher-exposure scan be reserved for cases where lower-exposure imaging cannot supply the diagnostic information required — relevant to orthodontic planning, impacted teeth and implant placement, all of which the practice handles on site.
The January 2026 guidance addresses a related question patients ask often: how frequently X-rays are needed. The recommendations favor imaging selected according to individual clinical need and history rather than a fixed calendar interval.

North Shore Elder Law Launches Guide on Dying Without a Will

The guide walks through estate planning without a will under Massachusetts law, from who inherits property to who makes medical decisions if incapacity strikes first.
Under Massachusetts intestate succession law, property passes to relatives in a fixed order set by statute, regardless of what the deceased actually wanted. Every asset held solely in that person's name must pass through probate, a court-supervised process that adds time, cost, and public exposure to what could otherwise remain a private transfer. Unmarried partners, stepchildren and named charities receive nothing under this framework unless they appear in a legally binding document.

The guide outlines four documents that close those gaps. A will directs where assets go instead of leaving the decision to a fixed statutory formula. A durable power of attorney authorizes a chosen agent to manage finances if incapacity occurs. A health care proxy names someone to make medical decisions. A HIPAA authorization gives that person access to the medical records needed to make informed choices on someone else's behalf.
If incapacity comes before death, a probate court judge decides who manages medical and financial matters unless a durable power of attorney and health care proxy already name someone else. The guide also corrects a common misunderstanding: Massachusetts does not recognize living wills as legally binding documents. A written wish about end of life care carries no authority on its own. Only a properly executed health care proxy can direct a hospital or court on someone's behalf.
Massachusetts also imposes its own estate tax, with a $2 million exemption for deaths occurring on or after January 1, 2023. The guide notes that passing that threshold, or failing to plan around it at all, can reduce what heirs ultimately receive. For families who may need long term care later, MassHealth applies a five year look back period before approving coverage, so a plan built after care becomes urgent can arrive too late to protect a home or savings.
The guide also addresses how a plan can be built around specific goals, ranging from a simple will to a trust based strategy designed to reduce estate tax exposure, protect assets from long term care costs, or provide for heirs with more complex needs.
The difference between planning ahead and leaving those decisions to the state shows up in four areas, according to the guide: who makes decisions, how much tax exposure a family faces, how exposed assets are to long term care costs, and how long the process takes. With a plan, families choose their own beneficiaries and decision-makers, manage tax exposure through titling and trusts, protect assets years in advance from long term care costs, and typically settle an estate privately and faster. Without one, the state assigns decision-makers by a fixed formula, tax exposure applies in full above the exemption threshold, MassHealth's look back period applies without exception, and the estate moves through court supervised probate that is slower and part of the public record.
"Families often delay planning because they assume it only applies to large estates or advanced age," said Michael A. Stankavish, principal and founder of North Shore Elder Law & Estate Planning. Algo Trading Space Releases a Free Euro-Dollar Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5 Taken From Its Live Trading Portfolio

Instead of closing a losing position at a fixed stop, the strategy switches to a recovery grid once the price has moved 120 pips against the initial trade. Additional positions are then added every 40 pips, and the whole sequence is treated as one basket that closes when the combined floating profit reaches a target of 20 dollars at the default lot size of 0.02. The company states that every layer uses the same fixed lot size, so the grid does not follow a martingale pattern in which position sizes multiply after losses. On the live ATS Origin Portfolio account, which is held with a retail forex broker, the euro-dollar strategy had closed four trades at the time of publication, all profitable, for a net gain of $14.33 on 0.08 total lots, a sample the company itself describes as too small to draw conclusions from. The full portfolio, which runs all four expert advisors, had closed 59 trades with a profit factor of 3.18 and an account gain of 4.6 percent over 51 days, figures the company says were verified through its own tracking software. The company notes that past performance does not indicate future results.
The strategy belongs to a portfolio that trades the euro, the British pound, the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar and the Swiss franc against various partner currencies, and the company said it revised the portfolio about one month after launch. According to the company, the changes removed a martingale sequence that some of the original expert advisors had used, added protection to the grid so that a losing sequence is closed once losses reach a set level, and introduced two further strategies covering the dollar-franc pair and the Australian and New Zealand dollars against the Canadian dollar. The live account is public, which lets outside observers review open positions and closed trades without relying on the company's own summaries.
Setup follows a five-step process. Traders download the compiled file, place it in the Experts folder of the MetaTrader 5 data directory, load the supplied settings file, allow web requests to the company's address so the software can verify its license and retrieve news data, and attach the expert advisor to a euro-dollar chart set to one hour. An on-chart panel then reports the license status and current trading information. Because the grid can hold several positions open at once, the company recommends a virtual private server that keeps the terminal running continuously, and it identifies a balance of around $5,000 as a reasonable baseline, while noting that smaller balances can work if risk parameters are adjusted.
The company also set out the limits of the product. It is designed for MetaTrader 5 accounts that permit hedging and does not work on netting accounts. It is unsuited to traders who want high-frequency scalping, who want full control of each exit, or who cannot tolerate temporary floating drawdowns, and prop firm users are told to check whether a provider's rules allow grid trading and basket exits.
